Why is it called super chunky?

Super thick, super soft and super stylish! Super chunky yarn is the thickest and heaviest weight of our chunky knit yarns and is typically used with 10mm - 25mm needles. You don’t even need needles, discover the easiest way to knit, with your hands. It’s also great with so many of your hand knitting and crochet designs and gives you a taste of ‘extreme knitting’.

Is Merino wool soft? 

Our premium Merino wool has fibres that are finer and much more flexible than regular wool, giving its yarn an incredible softness. Its fluffy light touch texture is perfect for items that are used close to the skin as it doesn’t scratch or cause irritation. With fantastic insulating qualities and each fibre helps regulate body temperature making it easier to care for with a longer life and can even be machine washable.

What is the size of super chunky Merino wool?

Super chunky Merino wool is our thickest size wool available. The yarn material thickness is approx. 4-5cm when unwound from the ball. 4.5 kg will equal around 200 meters of yarn with 25-micron high-quality Merino wool, made from the fleece of the Merino sheep.

For consistent stitches, use the palm of your hand to measure their width. You can either have tight or loose-knit patterns, but we recommend going with looser as this keeps your items more elastic and fluffy looking.

How do you felt super chunky merino wool?

Once you’ve gathered together your supplies (yarn, felting needles, shape cutters, pad and finger protectors) you first need to thin out your wool and position it in the desired shape cutter. Second, use your felting needle to thread through in and out all over the fibre, being careful to do the edges too. Then turn it over and repeat the process on the other side. Finally, continue until the wool is shaped into one tough piece of fabric.

For easy and comfortable knitting, we recommend giant needles 1.5 inches/40mm in diameter and 9.5 inches / 24cm in length. They should include a plastic tube that will help the yarn from sliding about. Normally, the tube length is 40 inches / 100cm. Most needles are polished smooth making them a joy to knit your chunky projects with. 

How do you stop super chunky yarn from shedding?

Merino wool is a delicate fibre and just like with normal wool some shedding is to be expected and not due to any defect. Once you’ve finished your project you should wash it to help eliminate shedding and with proper aftercare, you can keep your items lasting longer. Read more about our aftercare instructions here

What is the thickest yarn you can buy?

The thickest yarn in our current selection is the super chunky yarn 4-5cm, 25 microns. It’s perfect for all your XXL knitting and crocheting. It’s one of the chunkiest yarns available and really user-friendly, great for hand knitting/knitting with your hands. 

What is the softest super chunky yarn?

With an ultra-fine and delicate texture, Merino wool yarn is by far the softest type of wool yarn. Perfect for items that come in contact with the skin and are simply a pleasure to touch. Our chunky yarn is only 25 microns and compared to human hair (90 microns!) it’s plush and squeezable fibres it’s also durable and can return to shape if stretched.

Is bulky and chunky yarn the same?

Both ‘Chunky’ and ‘Bulky’ refer to the yarn weight (thickness). Most of the time it’s a difference in terminology. Yarn size 5+ is most often referred to as “Chunky” in the UK and “Bulky” in the U.S.
